What can I do to protect my home from wildland fires?
To protect your home from wildfires, you must create a “defensible space” or “firebreak” by reducing the amount of dead or dying fuel (vegetation) around your home. This does not necessarily mean all vegetation should be removed. In fact, having fire-resistant plants and trees your home that are properly trimmed and well watered can serve as a firebreak.
How do I create an escape plan for my home or business ?
The four basic steps in creating an escape plan for your home includes: drawing a floor-plan of your home; agreeing on a meeting place; practicing your escape plan; and making sure your exit drill is realistic.
What kind of fire extinguisher should I buy for my home ?
Homeowners should buy an extinguisher that can handle Class A-B-C fires. This type of extinguisher is designed to extinguish fires that usually occur in homes including wood, paper, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.
Do I need to put a smoke detector in every room? How many do I need?
Smoke detectors should be placed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
On floors without bedrooms, detectors should be installed in or near living areas such as dens, living rooms, or family rooms. Remember to test the detectors regularly !
What should I do with HOT fireplace or woodstove ashes ?

If my carbon monoxide detector activates, what should I do ?
Carbon Monoxide (also known as the silent killer) is a colorless/odorless gas that is created by the incomplete combustion of carbon based fuels. It is recommended that you install a Carbon Monoxide Detector on each level of your home and if a detector activates, call 911 and leave your home. EPFD will come and check for any level of Carbon Monoxide that may be present. Always remember, “When in doubt, call us out.”
What is a “Knox Box” and where can I obtain one ?
A Knox Box is a secured box that is placed on the front of a home or business that contains keys to a commercial building or residence. The purpose of a Knox Box is to allow Fire District personnel access to the structure if they have to make entry in the event of an emergency. The Fire District has a secure master key which allows them to unlock the Knox Box to gain access to the building keys.

How often should I change my smoke detector batteries ?
Your batteries should be changed at least once a year. An easy way to remember is to change them when your clocks are changed to and from Daylight Savings Time in the spring and fall. Need help ? How should I plan for a disabled family member during a fire ?
Assure that you have a well-defined escape plan. Make sure that people who are confined to a wheelchair have immediate access to their wheelchair when an emergency occurs.
What is the best thing to do for a burn ?
Cool a burn with water. Do not use ointments, butter, or other substances. For minor burns contact a physician. For serious burns, dial 9-1-1 immediately.
